The Pink House in Buenos Aires

The Casa Rosada is the headquarters of the Executive Power of Argentina, it is where the President of the Nation has his office.

The building is located on Calle Balcarce 50 in the city of Buenos Aires, in front of the historic Plaza de Mayo. 

The location of the building is exactly where the Fort of Buenos Aires stood in 1580.

The color pink began to be used since the presidency of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento in 1870.

It is said that this color was chosen by President Sarmiento to unite the color of the two political parties that fought in a civil war for much of the 19th century, the Unitarians (white) and the Federals (red).

Both the Casa Rosada and the Plaza de Mayo are emblematic places of Buenos Aires.

Plaza de Mayo: The Plaza de Mayo is located in front of the government house, it is a historical place for Argentines since the beginning of the Republic.

On May 25, 1810, the people of Buenos Aires met in what today would be the Plaza de Mayo (Plaza de la Victoria at that time) to demand the resignation of the Viceroy and the formation of a Creole Government Board.

At that time to identify the patriots who wanted the independence of Spain from the royalists began to use cockades of light blue and white.

Years later during the Peronist governments (1946-1955) the Plaza de Mayo was filled with workers to listen to the speeches of President Perón and his wife, Evita Perón.

Cabildo: The Cabildo is located opposite the Casa Rosada, in the opposite sector of the Plaza de Mayo.

It was the place of government during the colonial years, and the first years of Argentine government.

Metropolitan Cathedral of Buenos Aires: The Cathedral is also located in front of the Plaza de Mayo.

The Cardinal who was in charge of the Cathedral until March 13, 2013 was Jorge Mario Bergoglio, current Pope Francis.

During the week you can visit the Cathedral from Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

On Saturdays and Sundays the visiting hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
