The Floralis Genérica (Buenos Aires)

La Floralis Generica is the work of the architect Eduardo Catalano, it pays tribute to all the flowers in the world.

Once finished, Catalano gave the work to the City of Buenos Aires.

It is the first moving sculpture controlled by photoelectric cells and a hydraulic system, the work is made of stainless steel and aluminum.

This beautiful sculpture of 20 meters and 18 tons, was inaugurated on April 13, 2002 in the United Nations square, the square is located on Avenida Figueroa Alcorta 2300, in front of the Faculty of Law of the UBA.

The Generic Floralis through its mechanism performs the opening and closing of its six petals according to the movement of the sun. 

At 8:00 p.m. the petals close, the Floralis remaining asleep throughout the night, to reopen the next morning.

The opening and closing system is automatic, and they last 15 minutes.

While the Floralis remains asleep, twelve red projectors are turned on, illuminating the interior of the petals with this color.

A few years after its inauguration, the mechanism broke due to a strong storm, leaving the petals open for 24 hours. 

Until on June 10, 2015, after carrying out its repair, the sculpture was reopened, allowing the recovery of its original movement.
