Caminito (La Boca)

Caminito is the pedestrian promenade in the La Boca neighborhood, it has been one of the most visited places in Buenos Aires for decades. 

It is an open-air museum of 150 meters, where you will find a part of the colorful tenement houses that the neighborhood had in the middle of the 20th century.

The conventillos were large sheet metal and wood houses where several families rented the rooms as housing.

During the 1950s, a group of neighbors, including the famous painter Benito Quinquela Martin, managed to turn this forgotten passage into a pedestrian walkway.

Previously it had been part of the Buenos Aires-Ensenada railway line, until in 1928 this branch was closed, and this part of the route became an abandoned alley.

In 1959, Quinquela himself was the one who suggested baptizing the walk with the name “Caminito”. I take this name from a well-known tango composed in 1926 by Juan de Dios Filiberto and Gabino Coria Peñaloza.

The reality is that the famous name "Caminito" that was used in tango was not in homage to the Paseo de La Boca, but rather comes from a poem written by Gabino Coria Peñaloza in 1903, dedicated to a path in the town from Olta (La Rioja).
